Peaches and Cream

The lyrics in the song "Peaches and Cream" by John Butler Trio are metaphorical. Throughout most of it the listener gets the idea that the song is about the singer's girlfriend or wife. In reality, it is about his daughter. The singer questions his life throughout most of the song until he realizes he has everything he needs.

The lyrics, "well there's far too many questions to ask, to answer any of them tonight for i wear too many masks to tell you if any of them are wrong or right," indicates the singer is questioning many things in his life. "And confusion casts a shadow upon me like a great big cloud in the sky," is a simile. It is saying that this singer is confused about a lot of things in his life and they are all held over him. It is indicated in the lines "for so long I've sang this sad old song and it feels like my time is up," that he is depressed, feeling not worthy, or emptiness. However, this answer we may never know. "For she came and landed in my arms, she filled my half empty cup," is a metaphor for his daughter filling the empty space in his life. Once she came into his life, his "cup" was full. Not only does his daughter fill his "half empty cup," but his wife also plays a role. This is seen in the lyrics "No longer is my cup half empty cause there you are, you and your mom infront of me." He realizes his life is not so empty because he has his family to fill it. In the lines "And now i look up above me and i thank the great old God in the sky for telling me my cup ain't half empty. It took my little girl to show me why," the singer or "father figure" thanks God everyday for showing him the good in his life.

A metaphor is a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things, without using the word like or as. Looking into the lyrics, you can see the comparison of an "empty glass" and an "empty life."
